He called for unity, urging allies and critics to rise above political differences.“Inspired by the freedoms that we secured in February 1986, let us all riseabove our petty political differences so that we may, together, ensure thatthe legacy of EDSA will remain relevant in the years ahead,” the ChiefExecutive said in a one-page message. He also underscored the need to “defend and preserve” the freedoms we gainedduring the first EDSA people power.“I therefore join the valiant heroes of EDSA and the countless others whoselives were touched by this bloodless uprising in commemorating its 34thanniversary with renewed hope that the succeeding generations of Filipinoswill also have the courage, strength and determination to protect, defendand preserve the liberties that we have won during that historicrevolution,” Duterte said.PEOPLE POWER A WARNING VS IRON-FIST RULE – ROBREDOMANILA — The EDSA people power revolution that toppled the 20-year Marcosdictatorship should serve as a warning to anyone who attempts “to suppressagain the people with an iron fist,” Vice President Leni Robredo saidyesterday. In her message on the commemoration of the 34th anniversary of the EDSArevolution, Robredo stressed the historic uprising didn’t ask for a “perfectleader” but “a government where people live with dignity, a government thatis honest and is not abusive.”“There’s no perfect leader and there’s no perfect democracy, but we didn’tgather then to call for a perfect leader or a perfect democracy,” said theVice President, who was among participants in the peaceful revolt in 1986.She added that after 34 years, Filipinos continue to face challenges becauseof the people who attempt to destroy the essence of the revolution “fortheir personal agenda.”“May EDSA serve as warning to anyone who attempts to suppress us with aniron fist. Kung kayang tanggapin ‘to ng majority ng mga kongresista, thankyou.
